Caldwell, OH 43724 Drilled in 1814 in an effort to find salt, Silas Thorla and Robert McKee struck oil where deer were know to lick. At first the substance was a nuisance and bottled for tonic, then later used as heating and lamp oil. The site was recently certified by the State of Ohio as a Great Ohio Adventure of Learning and is marked by an Ohio Historical Marker. The site has also been featured on PBS Television.
